With the advent of new European legislation all Economic Operators that are based and active in Europe will be assigned an EORI number.
(EORI number = Economic Operators Registration and Identification number).
This number allows economic operators in all member states to be identified in the same manner. This provides efficiency benefits for both these economic operators and Customs. An economic operator is ‘any physical or legal person who, in the course of his business, is involved in activities covered by Customs’.
The launching date for the use of the EORI number in the Netherlands is planned for 31 January 2010. From this date on, it is required to use this EORI number as an identification number in all customs procedures when exchanging information with Customs.
Various EU member states have already implemented the obligation to use the EORI number. When submitting import, export, or transit declarations in other member states, please verify with the customs authorities in that member state whether you are already required to use the EORI number.
